ArCi Innovation and Design Competition

Theme: Transformation towards a Resilient Society
26 – 27 June 2019, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Brief

There are places in which history is extremely meaningful. There are spaces where memory becomes nearly physical, tangible and where the memory of the past is stunningly real and intensively present. We can build our future for ourselves.

Inspired by the past, we are looking for green sustainable designs. Genuine problems of industry can become a new idea for academic researchers to promote the quality of industry and production.

In this regard, along with 3rd International Conference on Architecture and Civil Engineering (ICACE 2019) the first ArCi Innovation and Design competition will be held in Kuala Lumpur on 26 – 27 June 2019.

ArCi thanks all designers who will take part in this challenge.

ARCHITECTURE SCALED MODEL COMPETITION

Registration

Deadline for the registration is 26 May 2019. For the registration please follow the competition steps.

Sub-Theme

The three R’s of sustainability: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is a mean towards waste prevention and natural resources conservation which will eventually leads to a more resilient society. The concept of resiliency should be introduced to children through early education by teaching them about the environmental responsibility and the novelty of recycling waste materials. In order to achieve this, a designated structure/ building is needed to promote recycling programs in a community.

Participants are to design an innovative Community Recycling Centre of not more than 500 sqft. Each design will be presented in the form of architecture scaled model and presentation drawings.

Judging Criteria for Design Competition

Entries are judged on the quality of the design process, as being a balanced integration of inherent elements that are incorporated into the design of the project, including aesthetics, environmental considerations, feasible cost solutions, social and technical considerations.

A major focus is on design excellence, taking into account architectural form that epitomize the benefits of recycling, innovative use of materials and/ or renewable energy technology, and quality of the architecture scaled modeling.

Submission

The project should be submitted at our registration counter on 26 June 2019 from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Each submission should consist of maximum five (5) participants and to be presented by maximum two (2) persons. Each team will have three (3) minutes to present their designs.

Design Specifications/ Requirements

Architecture Scaled Model

Scale                      - 1:50

Size                        - Max length: 70cm, Width: 50cm, Height: 30cm

Materials             - Participants are free to use any type of materials for the architecture scaled model

Presentation Drawings

Drawings are to be mounted on one (1) A1 size board

TRUSS BRIDGE MODEL COMPETITION

Registration

Deadline for the registration is 26 May 2019. For the registration please follow the competition steps.

Sub-Theme

The purpose of Truss Bridge Model Competition is to challenge the communities to envision new, innovative reuse and recycle materials for economical infrastructures in a sustainable fashion. With the feats of architecture and engineering, a lot more can be done. This competition seeks to push that innovation one step further.

To reflect the concept of resiliency, participants are to design and build an economical Truss Bridge Model that is able to carry high loads.

Judging Criteria for Design Competition

The judging criteria on the physical measurements and structural efficiency are as follows:

1. Model Performance (70%)

  • Bridge models will be weighed and then tested on the structural tester. Results will be used to calculate strength-to-weight ratio.
  • Bridge will be tested for maximum efficiency. The bridge will be loaded via one loading bar between the vertical members of the bridge at the center. Weight applied to the bridge will be added until failure.
  • The bridge will also be judged on aesthetics value.

2. Oral Presentation (30%)

Competition requires teams to present their engineering justification of the model built. Each team is given 10 minutes to illustrate their design.

Submission

The model should be submitted at our registration counter on 26 June 2019 from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Each submission should consist of maximum five (5) participants and to be presented by maximum two (2) persons. Each team will have three (3) minutes to present their engineering justification of the model built.

Design Specifications/Requirements

Participants will need to bring the designed model to the competition following the design specifications/ requirements below:

1. Materials

Contestants are free to use materials listed below to design and construct the truss bridge with maximum weight of 500 g:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Satay sticks
  • Spaghetti
  • Balsa woods
  • Glue type : hot glue gun (Pinning, clamping or non-white glue are not allowed to be used for connections)

2. Dimensions

The bridge must be able to rest across an opening of 600 mm and free from support by 30 mm on each side with the following dimension:

  • Width - 100 mm to 200 mm wide to allow a 50 mm x 50 mm block to pass.
  • Height - less than 300 mm high and protrude no more than 50 mm below the bottom of the bridge deck.
